The first obstacle is where and how are we going to start this colony. Taking over an island seems like a great way to get on the bad side of the UK and US, and making a makeshift floating city seems too unreal. Then again, the island idea sounds more stable than hiding somewhere on US soil. This thread is dedicated to the research on WHERE and WHAT are we building. My basic ideas are: -Designated areas for living -areas for power supply -areas for farming and food -areas for military -areas for factories -social areas and shops -Jail system -Information archive -schools -Areas for government / judicial system -Areas for royalty (depending on system of government) These are the core basics of what we NEED to build for a working society. None of these need to be top notch, but they are crucial nonetheless. This thread is for the blueprints / ideas of how we can incorporate the PHYSICAL buildings of these places, not a thread for debate of what we need / political opinions / arguing. My idea so far is to cut off each part of the island / territory into these parts to keep thing's organized and well structured. Attachments:

My idea for power generation so far has been solar panels feeding into a rechargeable 120V battery bank, then into an inverter that gives 120V 60Hz mains power. Relatively cheap and easy to set up.
UPDATE: 240V seems like a better choice.

No designated shitting streets?
Anyway, we'll need to have considerably land area for farming and food than most other things. Although fishing can meet part of our requirements. Jail system? No. If people are bad enough we think they should be jailed they get a one-way boat ride off the island.
Taking over an island seem to be a bad way of getting argentina'd yes... But if we colonise an island with permission we can ask for independence afterwards.

Water/Wind turbines are also a cheap and viable option. Not being dependent on one power source seems like a good idea.

Running a PV setup will be expensive and unreliable. I would suggest wind and oil initially until a reliable power production setup is found and the colony is stable.

We really need to focus on using renewable energy though, we want to be self sufficient don't we? What kind of wattage are we likely to get out of wind turbines?

Yes, but if you're starting off and you think PV is going to be reliable without first establishing transmission and storage means you're going to have a very rude awakening.
This is why wind and petroleum would be better - they can be set up to be used at point-of-use so you don't have to worry about either transmission or storage.

Storage is important, we need to keep the power on when there is no sunlight/wind.

That's why I said petroleum. Use it when you need it. Storage is more expensive and difficult than you may think and could take quite a while to set up.

A DIY one won't be as good as an industrial one. But one with blades the size of the average human should give over 1kw

Why is the floating city so unreal? We can buy scrap metal cheaply, use it as a hull of the ship, and just fill the whole thing with soil. Probably can just dig soil from backyard or somewhere then carry it along in rented trucks, although I'm not familiar with possible related regulations. We can hire a company to do this cheaply.

We can also buy barges or older ships and create a very unique looking city
