Fishing - I'll take it as a given we have access to the sea and therefore fish. Fishing is easy if you have an ounce of common sense. Setting up nets near the shore and operating cast nets from boats can be a reliable source of food.
Farming (crops) - What can be grown is dependent on the climate and the existing ecology of the area. Unless we're in a completely barren place like tundra, desert or an outcrop we'll be able to grow something. 'Cash crops' such as tropical fruits, tobacco can be valuable exports.
Farming (livestock) - People are going to hate me for this, but growing crops are a much more efficient use of land. There's nothing wrong with having a flock of chickens or a couple of cows to give us a supply of dairy, but say goodbye to meat (other than fish) being a part of your diet unless we have a very large ratio of person:fertile land
Preservation Fish, some fruits and vegetables can be preserved and stored. Drying, salting, canning, various others can be done easily. Other ways, like freezing, require technology and power.
Innovation Greenhouses can be used to grow some foods in parts of the world they might not otherwise grow, and to protect them from animals and disease. Floating gardens could be built somewhere calm stable to give us more area to grow stuff. Digging streams or building tanks to collect rainwater can irrigate crops. There are also edible plants which grow in seawater.

A year round hydroponics grow could be set up fairly easily and kick out food 2-3X as fast as soil also. Probably take a book out of the northern weed growers book. Get a old shipping freight container and just bury it and build out the inside. Keeps everything nice and safe from storms, floods, or other bullish.
I agree with the red meats. just not gunna work. Should look into turkeys as an alternative. If we could sustain and breed a group of turkeys and chickens then.. meat problem fucking solved. lol

We need to focus on crops that hold the most bang for their buck. Like corn, potatoes, barley, and wheat. Things that can be used in many different foods and can be used to give many proteins. Things grown off of vines, for example, would be very helpful. Like grapes, which we could then use to produce wine, if we liked, noting its cardiovascular health benefits, and its use as a possible reward for hard work.
Fish would be absolutely necessary to catch, but also shellfish for further proteins and calcium. If not, it will be necessary to have some goats and sheep for clothes and milk/dairy for calcium.
Furthermore, small birds like chickens and hens can be grown indoors with little need to give them anything but sunlight. The soil can be better appropriated for the crops, agreed.

How do you catch shellfish anyway?
I've only done netting and line fishing, never really thought about them

Assuming the settlement will be tropical (Growing Zone 12-13) there are a few bases that need to be covered to: sustaining population, warding off scurvy & protein poisoning, easy to grow Quinoa: +High protein +Easy to grow -Prefers temps below 90*F(32*C) -Long harvest cycles (90-120 days) Papaya: +High Vit A, Vit C, Sugar +Easy to grow +Matures and Fruits quickly +Fruits all year round -Lifespan is 2-3 years -Susceptible to over-watering and strong winds Arabica Coffee Plant: +Coffee +Cash Crop +Fruit all year round -High maintenance -Higher elevation produces high quality coffee (Might be a plus depending where the settlement is based) -Takes 5-7 years to mature if grown from seed (Mature plants can be ordered online which fruit within 1 season) Check out >link related for more tropical plants www.fast-growing-trees.com/Tropical-Fruit-Plants.htm

I desire a new land where we are free from the impending doom of the west. This could be it.

I like the idea of factory farming things. As chipsandhaterade said we could use hydroponics and fishing.
I believe most food will need to be imported as we start to grow.
Clearly the best way to do this is to conserve space with roof gardens, hydroponics, and fishing. Sense our economy will rely heavily on sells of goods and crafts then we can just import the vast bulk of food. This of course is the later stages of advancement.
