I'm aware that one of the goals of this society is to create a free conservative society. Still, I believe military training should be required. Obviously we don't need don't need a company of highly-trained commandos but a platoon of soldiers on a rotating shift of duty so that there are always some on duty at any time. The rest can fill out different shifts or work different jobs. I'm certain we have some veterans and police officers among us who could help train us to some degree. Any /k/ommmandos could help with the weapons and innawoods aspect.
Now assuming we have a population of 100 people, I propose that the majority portion that is not enlisted in the military be organized into a militia/national guard reserve type of role. They will receive training, weapons, and some supplies but should not expect to see any sort of combat role unless the unthinkable happens, invasion. Then they can be called upon like the minutemen of old.
The proper military will be a platoon of well-trained individuals. The founding documents will be sure to specify that this is a self-defense force not to be used for invasion. The military can be used for the purposes of counter-piracy, counterterrorism, defense of allied interests, defense of territory and vessels, defense of citizens, humanitarian efforts, and search and rescue. Having a well-defined code of conduct will not only do well for us but also look good diplomatically.
COMMAND STRUCTURE
At the top would be the Commander-in-Chief and assuming we go with a government system that has a leader. This leader would be the President, Prime Minister, Chancellor, etc.
Beneath this would be the high-ranking officers followed by the lower-ranking officers. The militia and the military would have different officers but report to the same Executive branch.
MILITIA
Every citizen of legal age is enlisted and undergo examinations every few months to ensure they can fight. The militia can only be activated if the Commander-in-Chief deems the situation dire enough to require it. The elderly and disabled would form support roles of some sort, young children and pregnant women would take shelter and be protected. Everyone else would form up into various pre-assigned squads. Former self-defense force members or individuals with strong leadership will be officers.
SELF-DEFENSE FORCES
All units are consolidated into a single multipurpose branch. Air assets beyond small drones used for reconnaissance are unlikely. The military will operate vessels to be used as coast guard. Light military vehicles are surprisingly easy to come by and cheap too. Jeeps can be procured or perhaps horses as transport. Armored vehicles like APCs are a possibility for the future, but the funds would be better spent elsewhere.
INFANTRY EQUIPMENT
For firearms, we can pretty much use whatever we want. It can be your dad's sks or some newfangled contraption. It would be ideal to get guns that require similar ammunition types to simplify procurement and similar types of weapons to make training easier. Knives would also be of great use. Explosives are a difficult aspect as people get pretty nervous around explosives. International community might think we're terrorists. Fatigues, uniforms, compasses, radios, helmets, gloves, boots, nightvision, medical supplies, and various other tools will be required but that would require experts to look into. Drones and other remote-controlled vehicles are certainly areas to look into. The Militia would have much of the same gear but for economic reasons and practical reasons, the best gear is reserved for the self-defense forces.
RESTRICTIONS
No part of the military is allowed to police civilians which will be left to our law-enforcement agencies. Any violations of international law and treaties will be dealt with most harshly.

What does everyone think of this? Garbage, getting ahead of myself, etc?
