Greenhouses man. We can grow food anywhere. We're gonna need real big greenhouses to feed an entire colony. But let's not rule it out yet.

Found some new candidates, Navassa Island. Uninhabited, large, easy to reach from the US and beautiful. Apparently it is "administered as unorganized unincorporated territory of the United States", not sure what that means exactly but it seems like a good option. Then there's Clarion Island, I believe it's uninhabited and again, can be easily reached from the US. Officially part of Mexico, I'm not sure how they'd react. Thoughts? We are going to need trees.

Rule out any US land, no matter how loosely affiliated or remote or unpopulated. The US has plans for every inch of its territory and would be more than willing to just fuck our shit up. Might not even be taken prisoners. A lot of constitutional rights don't apply in those territories, and there's no witnesses.
The UK, France, etc. are infinitely more flexible despite their large militaries and global reach. They've been bleeding colonies and territories for decades. Areas that are unimportant to these countries are more likely to get a pass so long as their citizens aren't in danger because of us.

Britain and France have been giving up any colony which doesn't want to be part of them. The few left are either completely dependent on them (like pitcairn) or chose to stay in a popular vote (like falklands).
Of course seceding can't happen until we have an established, legal settlement.

Navassa Island No fresh water sources, the plants are mainly poisonous and the ground is so damn sharp it literally cuts your shoes in two.
Clarion Island Has a navy station with six men on it, you don't want to spark a fight with Mexico they'd actually win. Apart from that it's mainly void of fresh water, having only three sources at all.

Isn't Flint Island a little small? 3 kilometers squared... Yeah, but does it really need to be big? All we need is a place to start.

Remember, one island in a federation. We need to start small. I'm looking at other atolls in Kiribati, will report what I find.

I know you goal is a federation, but you can't build a skyscraper on a bad foundation. If we ever start this in any way, we have to ensure that the home base is the best of the best, not some plot of land that seemed to be fitting. Don't get me wrong, all those islands are great starting point to some degree, but I'm still waiting for the gem to surface. One that sparks the will to move, the mind that states 'let's go!'. It may not come to be.

Malden Island
Closer to Hawaii than Flint, 40 square kilometers, uninhabited, no UN protection. Should take one week to get there at 8 knots.
